Millfield 13 selected for 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Millfield School have received 13 selections for this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games, so far.

The 33rd Olympic Games will take place in Paris between Friday 26 July 2024 and Sunday 11 August 2024, with the Paralympic Games taking place from 28 August to 8 September, featuring the best athletes from around the world.

Millfield’s 13 selections are made up of ten Old Millfieldians, two staff and one Swimming Performance Squad member.

Swimmers Matthew Richards (GB), James Guy (GB), Kieran Bird (GB), Mia Phiri (Zambia), Max McCusker (Ireland) and Emma Harvey (Bermuda) will be joined in Paris by Millfield Performance coach Ryan Livingstone (GB). Rowers Helen Glover, Rory Gibbs and Annie Campbell-Orde have all been selected for Team GB, while Erica Hawley will represent Bermuda in Triathlon. In the Paralympics, swimmer Suzanna Hext and Millfield Fencing coach Glen Golding have been selected by Great Britain. The seven swimmers selected is the most swimmers Millfield will have ever had at the Games.

Millfield Headmaster Gavin Horgan said “The entire Millfield Community is delighted to have 13 athletes and coaches from Millfield involved in the Olympics and Paralympics in Paris. They are an inspiration to all of us now and in the future. We wish them good luck and will be watching them every step of the way.”

A total of 13 Millfield athletes flew to Toyko to compete for their countries in the 2020 Olympic Games (held in the summer of 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic). Nine athletes represented Team GB, one for Kenya, Denmark, Brunei and Hong Kong. James Guy came home with two golds and a silver medal, making him the joint ninth most successful athlete at the games.

Millfield’s Olympic legacy consists of 79 Olympians, with a Millfield athlete being present at every Olympic Games since 1956. Millfield’s Olympians have won 19 medals in that time, including seven golds, five silvers and seven bronzes.
