Bridgemead care home, situated on the banks of the River Avon in the Bathwick area of Bath, held a summer garden party to mark the completion of flood works at the home. The £1.4 million flood protection project began in April 2025 and will help ensure the home can withstand future flooding events, the likelihood of which has increased in recent years.
While building works were underway, the garden was out of action. The party was a wonderful way to celebrate both the completion of the works and the renewed access to a much-valued outdoor space. The afternoon began with speeches in the home’s lounge before residents and guests were invited into the garden to enjoy mocktails and afternoon tea.
Councillor Dine Romero attended the event on behalf of the Mayor’s Office. She said, “The River Avon is an important part of life in the City of Bath and we need to make sure that we are managing it well. Bridgemead is a lovely facility and it’s therefore fantastic that these flood measures are in place and that vulnerable people are protected. It’s clear that the residents get a lot of joy from being here, including spending time in the beautiful garden space.”
Hazel, 92, moved to Bridgemead from the nearby village of Englishcombe. Hazel said, “Having lived out in the country, I’m used to being surrounded by nature. It’s lovely being able to come out in the garden and enjoy the trees and flowers.”
Built in 1992, Bridgemead is now owned by Pilgrims’ Friend Society, who took on the running of the home in October 2024. Stephen Hammersley, Chief Executive of Pilgrims’ Friend Society, said: “As a Christian charity, we are committed to ensuring that Christian care and community remains possible for older people in Bath. We took on Bridgemead knowing investment was needed to keep those who live and work there safe. I’m delighted that the works are now complete and the future of the home is secure.”
The measures include the addition of a wrap-around glass screen on the home’s lowest level and the extension of the existing flood defence wall. The project was overseen by Bath-based firm SRA Architects.
Bridgemead is a 32-bed residential care home in central Bath, caring for older people who require personal care or nursing. The care home is a home-from-home where residents are cherished and enabled to live fruitful lives in a loving Christian community.
