He’s one of the most recognisable faces at The Rec, a tireless supporter of the Blue, Black and White and quite possibly the only member of the Bath Rugby family who never has a bad hair day. We caught up with Maximus to talk match-day nerves, rituals, maintaining a perfect mane and his hopes and wishes for the season ahead.
Maximus, for anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure, how would you describe your role at Bath Rugby?
Officially, I’m the mascot. But I prefer Chief Roar Officer. I’m there to get The Rec going, keep everyone entertained and make sure the opposition knows exactly what they’re in for.
What does a typical match day look like for you?
Early start. Check the weather. Check the mane. Limber-up. Then it’s out to meet the supporters and roar some atmosphere. Once the game starts, things get serious.
How do you maintain that fabulous mane?
Years of dedication. People underestimate the amount of work involved. I won’t reveal all my secrets, but let’s just say West Country rain isn’t always helpful. You can’t represent Bath Rugby looking anything less than magnificent.
What’s the best thing about match day at The Rec?
That moment when the place really comes alive. A big Bath try, everyone on their feet, the noise rolling around the ground… even a lion gets goosebumps. Although, to be honest, I’m not sure if lions
do get goosebumps.
Do you ever get nervous before a big match?
Nervous? I’m a lion. Next question.
Who gets louder: you or the Bath supporters?
Me individually. Them collectively. It’s a very effective partnership.
Have you ever been tempted to get onto the pitch and help out?
Frequently. But apparently there are rules about these things. Also, I get through too many gum shields.
What’s the hardest part of being a mascot?
People pulling your tail…Yes, you know who you are!
And the best part?
Meeting the supporters. Particularly the younger ones. For some of them, their first visit to The Rec is a really big occasion. If I can make it even more memorable, I’ve done my job.
What does Bath mean to you?
It’s the cat’s whiskers, a beautiful city, it loves its rugby and there aren’t many places where a stadium feels quite so much a part of the city itself. On match day you can feel the whole place buzzing towards kick-off.
What are you looking forward to most this season?
Big games, big tries, big noise. The Rec packed, the Blue, Black and White flying and plenty of reasons to roar. Bring it on.
