Royal High Bath’s new flexible Middle School

Start in the Middle. Finish Ahead. Royal High Bath’s new flexible Middle School

As the newly appointed Head of Middle School at Royal High Bath, I am delighted to introduce our new Flexible Middle School model for girls in Years 5–8, launching in September 2026.

This model has been carefully developed to combine the nurturing environment younger girls need with the academic challenge and breadth of opportunity traditionally associated with Senior School. Crucially, it will offer as much benefit to our Year 7 and 8 pupils as it does to those in Years 5 and 6.

For girls in Years 5 and 6, the journey will begin within a specially designed, dedicated hub. Created with state-of-the-art design input, this space will be both homely and cutting-edge, providing a secure and welcoming base where pupils will feel supported as they begin to experience a more advanced style of learning. Here, they will benefit from a close-knit environment, while also accessing specialist teaching and purpose-built facilities from an early age. Movement around the wider school will be carefully supported and supervised, ensuring that our youngest pupils are nurtured with the structure and reassurance they need.

As girls progress into Year 7, this will mark an important rite of passage. With growing confidence and independence, they will gain wider access to the full school site and facilities, enjoying greater freedom and responsibility. This shift will be both symbolic and practical, empowering students to take ownership of their learning while continuing to benefit from the strong pastoral care that underpins our Middle School.

By Year 8, pupils will not only be fully immersed in Senior School life but will also be stepping into positions of leadership. They will act as role models for younger girls, take on additional responsibilities, and play a key role in shaping the culture of the school. Opportunities for mentoring, leadership, and collaboration will ensure they develop the confidence and self-assurance needed for the next stage of their education.

A key strength of this model will be the continuity it provides during a pivotal point in each girl’s educational journey. By ensuring a smooth and cohesive transitions between the Middle School year groups, we will sustain progress and provide consistency in both academic and pastoral provision. Girls will benefit from shared facilities, cross-year collaboration, and a unified curriculum that supports strong progression, develops leadership skills, and opens up opportunities in STEAM and beyond.

Ultimately, starting in the Middle and finishing ahead will be about ensuring every girl thrives at every stage. Whether beginning in the supportive environment of the Year 5 and 6 hub or stepping forward into the independence and leadership of Years 7 and 8, each pupil will be empowered to grow in confidence, capability, and ambition leaving the Middle School not just ready, but ahead.
