The Handful Chamber Choir: Like Snow in a Dark Night 

An antidote to the oncoming chill of winter, with one of Bath’s leading chamber choirs.

Like Snow in a Dark Night centres around two staples of the chamber choir repertoire: Morten Lauridsen’s powerful Mid-Winter Songs and Frank Martin’s exquisite Mass for Double Choir. 

Lauridsen’s extrovert, intense choral cycle explores the range of emotions in texts by Robert Graves, where winter is combatant and comfort in equal parts. In contrast, Martin’s Mass for Double Choir is monumental in scope yet intimate in character. Martin considered it to be “something between [him] and God” and waited forty years after composing it before he allowed it to be performed. It remains a centrepiece of 20th-century choral music.
