How many places are there still on earth where you can find your own private, pebbly cove in the month of August to while away the hours, swim, admire the stunning landscape, snooze and soak up the sun? Not many I am sure, but Paxos is one of these idyllic hideaways…
This is the real jewel of the Ionian and a very special island.
Sitting calmly in the amazing turquoise blue Mediterranean Sea you will find this beautiful Greek isle. The only way to this haven is a fun boat ride, about an hour and a half journey, passing Corfu on your right and the Greek mainland on your left. The captain Nikos will welcome you on board with an authentic Ouzo or two to get you into the holiday mood. Sit with your legs dangling over the side of the boat and let the warm sea tickle your toes as you admire the inviting islands around you and allow yourself to relax and look forward to your first sighting of pretty Paxos in the distance …
Paxos is a beautiful holiday destination for those wanting to really unwind and step off the world for a while. It gives you peace and true relaxation, great food and the most amazing clear seas. Without an airport thankfully, it is away from mass tourism and you feel as if you have been scooped up and gently dropped down onto another planet.
This tiny green island measures approximately 10 x 4 km, is covered in ancient olive trees which are over 200 years old and enveloped by aquamarine waters. The locals are wonderful, welcoming and friendly and truly go out of their way to make sure you have a memorable holiday. An absolute paradise for sea lovers as swimming and boating should definitely not be missed.
Paxos offers so many beautiful, peaceful pebbly coves – there is always space for your own beach and privacy. A wonderful island too for walkers in the flower-filled cooler months of May and September. Meander through the characterful, old goat paths that have heard many secrets over time and you can even walk from one coast to the other in a morning.
Hiring your own small boat and going on an adventure out onto the gorgeous seas is a must for confident swimmers, to really appreciate the true and dramatic beauty of Paxos. It also gives you the incredible and unusual freedom of going exactly where you wish and dropping the anchor into the clear depths of the warm sea and swimming off the back of the boat or going snorkelling. Taking a picnic with you for the day and sitting on the boat and bobbing up and down on the water is heavenly. If you prefer your own ‘captain’ there are many organised boat trips around the island, exploring the amazing caves on the dramatic west coast.
Paxos has three picturesque harbour villages, Gaios, the capital and Loggos and Lakka. Each has its own very different style and personality and each one is certainly worth a visit by day and night.
Gaios is full of cool bars, restaurants, shops as well as wonderful traditional tavernas. Boat trips depart from Gaios to the stunning island of Anti-Paxos which has white silky, sandy beaches comparable to those in the Caribbean and is a short 20 minute, exciting ride away. Visit one of the two bays of Voutoumi or Vrika, both of which have their own tavernas which serve delicious food during the summer season but make sure you catch the last boat back to Paxos at 6pm.
Soak up the amazing sun sets from hilltop tavernas on the west coast, sip a cool beer or glass of wine in a waterfront bar and watch the colourful fishing boats bobbing up and down and taste the delicious Greek cuisine lovingly prepared by local families.
My favourite hotel on the island is the Paxos Club Hotel and Spa **** which lies 1 km out of Gaios and offers a warm, friendly and quality experience. The daily buffet breakfast can be taken up until 11am each day and offers a true selection of full and continental breakfast, tea, coffee and juices and fresh fruit.
There is a hotel bar and restaurant which is open daily and also a weekly BBQ. Refresh yourself in the beautiful swimming pool, enjoy the bubbles of the hotel’s Jacuzzi and take an afternoon or morning snooze on the enticing sun loungers around the pool.
New for 2017 is the gorgeous hotel Spa offering the most tempting and relaxing massages and body treatments.
The Paxos Club runs a free mini bus shuttle service regularly throughout the day into Gaios town and to the stunning nearby beach of Kaki Lagada, one of the most beautiful on the island.
Travel to Paxos by flying to Corfu with the flight time around three hours. An hour and a half’s boat ride later you will arrive on Paxos and be met by the Paxos Club Hotel mini bus which will take you on the short five minute journey to the hotel.
Perfect for couples, honeymooners, groups of friends and families, visit Paxos and be prepared to fall in love. No wonder more than 50% of first time visitors return year after year. It will fall into your heart… I myself have been hooked for the last 25 years!
