Seven University of Bath swimmers added to the Team England squad for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games
Holly Hibbott, Ed Mildred, Jacob Peters, Luke Turley and Brodie Williams are also among the 38 swimmers confirmed today as joining the previously-selected Tom Dean and Ben Proud in the home team for this summer’s Games.
University of Bath graduate Jay Lelliott will also make his Commonwealth Games debut when the swimming takes place at Birmingham’s Moseley Road Baths from 29 July to 3 August.
It will be Guy’s third Commonwealth Games appearance and the double Olympic Champion will be looking to add to the six medals – four silver and two bronze – that he won at Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018.
Anderson – who, like Guy, is coached by David McNulty at the British Swimming Performance Centre Bath – was a double-medallist on her Commonwealth Games debut in 2018, winning bronze in both the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relay. Hibbott, now Anderson’s training partner in Bath, was also part of the latter quartet.
Peters also raced for Team England in 2018, while fellow Tokyo Olympian Williams will be making his Commonwealth Games debut as will Mildred and Turley – the latter a Sports Performance graduate who was supported by a Santander Scholarship while combining study and sport at the University.
Fellow alumnus Lelliott, who won World University Games gold while coached by Mark Skimming in the University’s swimming squad, is another swimmer looking forward to his first Commonwealth Games experience.
“I have goals and this the first stage of my goal,” he said. “It’s a huge relief to get through this period because I know what I’m capable of. I’m so excited to get my head down for the Commonwealths in the summer now.”
Ten swimmers had been selected for the Team England squad before last month’s British Championships including double Olympic Champion Dean and World Short-Course Champion Proud, coached at the University by McNulty and Skimming respectively. Sport & Exercise Science graduate Anna Hopkin, another Tokyo 2020 gold-medallist, was also pre-selected.
