Millfield School Upper Sixth and GB junior rider, Lauren Dolan, came back from injury to finish 27th in the junior women’s time trial at the 2017 UCI Road World Championships in Bergen, Norway.

Lauren, who joined Millfield Prep in Year 7 and is from Newton Abbott, had been working for two years towards a successful performance at the event in Norway. On track for a podium position at the halfway point, Lauren went through a tunnel at 60kmh when her front wheel collided with a drain cover on the road.

The determined Millfield pupil finished the race on a spare road bike, only two minutes and 24 seconds down on eventual winner Elena Pirrone (Italy).

After the race, Lauren was taken to hospital in Bergen where she received treatment for her injuries, which included surgery on three deep lacerations on her leg.

Now back at school, Lauren is focusing on her recovery with Lead Practitioner, Millfield Institute of Sport and Wellbeing, Graham Williams, and plans to return to racing, as well as continuing with her A levels.

Exciting times lie ahead for Lauren, who has just been selected for the GB U23 team. Lauren hopes to pursue a career in professional cycling, with her sights next set on the Commonwealth Games in Queensland in April 2018.

Lauren says, “I have always tried to give my personal best in all that I do, and Millfield has reinforced that within me. I have been rewarded for my mental attitude at school, and though at the time of the race I was disappointed, I know that mentality to do the best that I possibly can, is what helped me cross the finish line, despite my crash.”

Graham Williams says, “Lauren has been engaged in the athletic development programme at Millfield since Year 9. Her motivation, drive and positive work ethic are key features of her physical training with us over the past 18 months, and I am positive these characteristics will ensure Lauren makes a speedy recovery over the coming months.”
