Like ‘The Messiah’? You will love Semele!
Nine glorious choruses from this early operatic gem enhance the story of Jupiter taking the mortal Princess Semele to be his mistress. It does not end well …or does it?
Our dynamic production will be set five minutes from now in a world adjacent to our own in which the drab reality of the populace is enlivened by the new Gods of the internet, social media stars, influencers and instagrammers, Jupiter, his wife Juno et al. Semele is swept off, less to a mountain top, instead to a luxury spa and retreat by her paramour. Her ultimate destruction, however, which is the culmination of the jealous machinations of Juno, proves a blessing in disguise for everyone else, with the creation of Bacchus, the new ‘God’ of wine and the chorus end by celebrating their new form of relief and escape – inordinate intoxication!
The venue is the impressive, airy and comfortable Roper Theatre on the Hayesfield School Campus in Bath which offers plenty of on- street parking . Fully staged orchestral production from Bath’s resident opera company.
